Overview The Institute of Concrete and Structural Engineering is one of 13 different institutes of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. The Institute which is led by professor Schnell employs one postdoctoral researcher and, 8 members of research staff (PhD students). Furthermore, the Institute includes a Junior-Professorship- Energy-efficient buildings" led by Jun.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Pahn – employing two further member of research stuff and a second Junior-Professorship for "Construction with High-Performance Concrete"- employing one further member of research staff. Only three of the 14 researchers are funded by public funds. The main part of the funding is provided by supported research projects and contract research of the industry. The Institute has excellent laboratory capacities. Currently, four members of research staff are working on projects in the field of glass fibre-reinforced polymers (GFRP) in reinforced concrete structures.

Key Research Activities

The activities in the field of GFRP comprise large scale experiments as well as theoretical research on the behaviour of GFRP in defined applications in the area of concrete construction with consideration of durability and cyclic loading. By participating in several national and international bodies (e.g. fib, DAfStb, DIBt), the team members support the standardization as well as the introduction of new GFRP building products.
